Alfred N. Dionne Jr.

May 21, 1966 — Jun 7, 2026

Norwood

The family of Alfred (Al) Dionne Jr. is deeply saddened to announce his unexpected passing on June 7 at the age of sixty in Norwood, Massachusetts. While his sudden departure leaves a profound void, we focus our hearts on the quiet strength and steady kindness that defined his life.

Born in May 21, 1966 in Boston to Alfred (Fred) and Joan (Cronin) Dionne, Al grew up with a reserved nature, showing an early and enduring loyalty to his family and close friends.  He graduated from Needham High School and attended Northeastern University.  He went on to build a respected career in the then-emerging field of information technology, starting as a computer programmer at Bradlee’s before moving onward to a decades long career as a Principal Applications Developer at Boston College, where his dedication, leadership, and brilliance left an enduring mark.

Beyond his professional achievements, Al was a gentle, kind, and reserved soul. He was always incredibly generous with his expertise, constantly stepping up to help family and friends solve whatever technology problems or computer glitches came their way.  His quiet generosity also extended to the broader community through his dedicated, long-standing commitment to donating platelets, a quiet act of service that touched countless lives. He was an avid enthusiast of film and television, always appreciating compelling and transportative narratives.  He held a fondness for the cross-country family road trips of his childhood, and the zest for travel carried into adulthood. A loyal fan of Formula 1 and all the Boston sports teams, he spent many of his happiest hours passionately cheering on his favorite professional sports teams.  His quiet presence, thoughtful nature, and steady loyalty will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Following the passing of his cherished mother in 2013, Al showed unwavering commitment and comfort to his father, ensuring he was never alone in his grief.  As a brother and an uncle, his exceptional generosity, warmth, and steady support were constants in the lives of his sisters, nieces, and nephew.  Al's legacy of love and integrity lives on through his surviving family.  He is survived by his beloved father, Alfred Dionne of Bedford, NH; his sisters, Catherine Dionne Doherty and her husband Frederick Doherty of Chelmsford, and Michele Dionne Small and her husband David Small of South Dennis; his nieces and nephew, Michele Doherty Rome, Sarah Doherty and Daniel Small; and a community of friends, neighbors and colleagues who became family.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Norwood first responders for their swift action, professionalism, and compassionate care during this sudden crisis. They are equally grateful to Al's neighbors, whose kindness, support, and presence provided immense comfort during a difficult time.

A formal celebration of his life will be held on June 30 from 4pm to 7pm at Doherty - Barile Family Funeral Home, located at 11 Linden Street, Reading, MA 01867. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and share their favorite memories.

In honor of Al’s vibrant spirit and generous nature, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Red Cross or Joslin Diabetes Center.
