Alfred J. Ghergia

Alfred James Ghergia, of Stoneham, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with a long term illness.

Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife Frances (Oppedisano) Ghergia who passed away in January of 2025. He leaves behind his son Mark Ghergia and his wife Susan, his daughter Kristin Scioli and her husband Frank; his grandchildren  Savannah Price, Matthew Ghergia and his wife Cori, Lily Scioli, Melissa Navarrette and her husband Fransisco , Keri Rieben and her husband Christian, great grandchildren Mia and Mikey, his brother Vincent Ghergia and his sister Paula Ghergia. Alfred also leaves behind many beloved sister and brother iin-laws along with his many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.  

Born on February 4, 1948, Alfred proudly served his country as a member of the 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War. He faced the challenges of war with remarkable bravery and, upon returning home, spent the rest of his life facing another battle with the same courage and resilience.

At just 21 years old, Alfred married the love of his life, beginning a lifelong journey built on love, devotion, and family. He was a talented musician who found joy in writing music and playing piano and guitar. Whether through a song, a laugh, or a kind word, Alfred had a way of bringing people together.

He will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and infectious sense of humor. He never let his illness take away his gentle spirit or his ability to make others smile. He was loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Bedford VA Nursing Facility, specifically the Dementia Unit. Their compassion, dignity, and unwavering care meant more than words can express. They treated Alfred like family, surrounding him with kindness, comfort, and respect throughout his final years. His family will always be grateful for the love they showed him.

Alfred’s service to his country, devotion to his family, and unwavering spirit will never be forgotten. He leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with Alfred's Family on Sunday, July 19th from 3-5pm in the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street (RT 28) STONEHAM. Parking attendants and elevator are available.

Alfred and Fran will be reunited and laid to rest together on Monday, July 20th at 11:30am at the VA Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne.  Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
