Andrew “Andy” Joseph Gill, a resident of Stoneham, Massachusetts and formerly of Charlestown, Massachusetts entered eternal life on June 7th, 2024 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He was 93 years of age.
Andy was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 27th, 1930, the son of the late Patrick Gill and Bridget (Doherty) Gill. Andy grew up in Charlestown and graduated from B.C. High School where he participated in track and basketball. His basketball team was the Eastern Massachusetts finalist and won the 1948 Boston Conference Championship.
Andy was a Navy veteran during the Korean War who served his time on an aircraft carrier. On return from service, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and continued his education at Bentley University. Andy worked as a Systems Analyst at H.P. Hood and then EG&G until his retirement. He was also a member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboy’s Association.
Andy was well read, enjoyed crossword puzzles with his wife Marie and loved to travel. One of his last trips was to Clonmany in Donegal, Ireland where his parents resided before moving to Boston. Andy was very competitive and enjoyed participating in football, basketball and golf. In his retirement years, he excelled at racquetball and played well into his 80s and even had a tournament named after him. He was very proud of his family and loved spending time with them.
Andy was the loving husband of the late Marie (Olson) Gill for 69 years. He was the devoted father of Patrick and Vicki, Robert and Robin, Michael and Christine and Mary. Andy was a loving Grandpa to Courtney, her husband Keith, Kelcey, Michael, John, Thomas and Richard and his great-grandchildren, JT, Grayson, Leighton, Nora and Ray. Andy was predeceased by his brothers, Francis Gill and his wife, Cecelia, John Gill and Joseph Gill. He was also predeceased by his sisters-in-law Barbara Shannon and her husband, Thomas and Rita Butler and her husband, Warren. Andy is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with Andy's Family on Thursday, June 13th from 8am - 9:30am in the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street (RT 28) STONEHAM. Parking attendants and elevator are available.
A Funeral Mass Celebrating Andy's Eternal Life will be held at 10am on Thursday, June 13th in Saint Patrick Church, 71 Central Street Stoneham. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
