Ann Marie Daly Skladany

Ann Marie Daly Skladany, of Stoneham, passed away on Thursday March 26th, 2026. She was 85 years of age. Her family, friends, and neighbors will miss her sweet nature, vibrant curiosity, easy laughter, and joyful outlook.

Ann was born and raised in Allston and Brighton to Kathleen (Whooley) Daly and Thomas Daly of County Cork, Ireland. She came of age listening to the radio, attending Saint Columbkille School in Brighton, and watching Elvis on Ed Sullivan. She was sent to kindergarten a year early (eager to join her older sister Marguerite at school), and headed to Boston State Teachers College at 17. After graduating, she surprised everyone by moving to Libya to teach the children of servicemen on an American Air Force base, and soon after took a similar job in Tokyo, Japan. It was in Tokyo that she met the love of her life, Bill Skladany, a dashing Slovak from Cleveland who shared her taste for adventure.

Back in the States, the pair were married and settled in Stoneham, where they raised their son, Evan. Ann taught in Newton and became an elementary librarian; her career would take her to Salem, and later, Billerica, but not before a mid-career stint in Bangkok, Thailand. Ann ran the elementary-school library of the International School Bangkok, where Bill taught sixth grade and Evan went to high school. During this fascinating and eventful year, the Skladanys joined a lively and welcoming international community, immersed themselves in the hospitable culture of Thailand, and travelled to Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia, and Japan.

Ann and Bill finished their careers back in Massachusetts, and enjoyed a happy retirement, traveling around the US, visiting France, and spending several winters in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. They attended Evan's wedding to his wife Rachel in Brooklyn in 2007, and welcomed their grandson, Erik, in 2011. They were loving and supportive parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle to many nieces and nephews in both Massachusetts and Ohio. They loved food and cooking, and were consummate hosts to legions of friends and family.

Bill passed away in 2015, and though she missed him terribly, Ann established an active and independent chapter of her life with the help of an engaged and fun-loving group of friends, a supportive exercise class at the Wakefield Senior Center, and neighbors who treated her like family. She had just moved into a sunny, independent-living apartment at New Horizons at Choate in Woburn, and couldn't have felt more welcome or grateful to be there.

Ann is the beloved wife of the late William Skladany, cherished mother of Evan Skladany and his wife Rachel Bello, and loving grandmother of Erik Skladany. She is the dear sister of Marguerite Daly and her late husband Don Solmon, and Ed Daly and his wife Karen Lieberman-Daly. She is the aunt of Katharine Daly and her husband Bill Howe, Colin Daly and his wife Rachel, and great-aunt of their daughter, Cora Jean Daly. Although she will be deeply missed, her kindness, interest in others, and sunny disposition live on in all who knew and loved her.
