Bernard C. Vacon

d. May 22, 2013

Bernard C. Vacon, 93, died on May 22 at the Veteran's Medical Center in Bedford after declining health. He was the loving son of Alex and Rose (Bourque) Vacon and the loving husband of the late Mary (Lopez) Vacon, devoted father of Mary Maher and her husband Thomas and Carol Vacon. Cherished grandfather of Scott Maher and Amanda Middleton and her husband Dana. Very proud great grandfather of Elise Maher, Ava and Evan Middleton. Brother of Paul Vacon of Enfield, CT and the late Victor Vacon and the late Helen Vacon, both of Stoneham.

In addition to being the former Chief of Police of Stoneham for 25 years, he was an avid fly fisherman who taught his grandson, Scott, the fine art of fly fishing. Over the years, they enjoyed numerous trips together salmon fishing in Alaska and New Brunswick. He also especially enjoyed tennis and hiking in the woods with his grandchildren where they would track animals and build a fire to roast hotdogs. Bernie loved spending summers boating and fishing with his family at his cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Bernie was a very accomplished storyteller. He would captivate his own children and later his grandchildren with wonderful animal adventures. Bernie was a US Army Veteran and served in the military police during World War II in North Africa and Europe. A long standing Member of the Board of Directors of the Stoneham Savings Bank, he was also Recording Secretary of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, and a former Treasurer of the Fuller House of Stoneham, where he also lived happily for the last three years.
