Betty Klein McManus, of Stoneham, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday September 1, 2021.
Born on December 4th, 1923, Betty was a pioneer in The Women's Movement before there was such a phrase. Betty was one of the first women to graduate Case Western Reserve University with degrees in science. She then went on to become one of the first women meteorologists in the US Weather Bureau, starting in Cleveland, Ohio and eventually becoming Chief Meteorologist in Louisville, Ky., where she met the love of her life Tom McManus. They were married and moved to Stoneham. The McManus's raised their 3 children in Stoneham. Betty loved her children, shuffling them, Grace to the Boston Skating Club, and Paul and Michael to hockey rinks from Stoneham to Wisconsin and back.
Betty also loved education. Betty joined the PTO at Robin Hood School and created the first volunteer library in the school System. Betty saw needs in the educational system. So, she ran for School Committee. Betty sat on the SSC for 12 years, 3 of which she was Chairperson and then ChairMAN.
As her children grew, Betty went to work for Addison Westley Publisher as an editor in the science department. Betty also loved to read, play scrabble and bowl with her friends on the Gems Team. Betty was a past member of St Patrick's Women Club and Greater Boston Stage Co. Guild.
Betty is the devoted mother of Grace and Michael of Stoneham, and Paul of Nashua, N.H. She is the cherished grandmother of Kimberly McManus of Laconia, N.H. and Christopher and his wife Elizabeth McManus of Aurora, CO. Betty also has 2 great grandsons.
Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share her memories with her family on Friday September 3, 2021 in the Barile Family Funeral Home 482 Main St. (RT28) STONEHAM from 8:30-9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Betty's Eternal Life in St. Joseph Church 173 Albion St. Wakefield at 10 am.
