Bradford James Howard of Reading died in his home February 29, 2004 after a courageous battle with ALS. He was 61 years old.
Brad graduated from Reading Memorial High School, Class of 1960. As a member of the Air Force Reserve, Brad was based at Hanscom Field in Bedford and was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Mr. Howard attended Northeastern University and had an eclectic professional career. Beginning as an auto mechanic, Brad was also a land surveyor and real estate agent before finding his true calling as an engineer. He worked for Smith & Norrington Engineering Co. of Boston for many years. Among his notable projects, Brad helped in the design and construction of the Gillette Facility in Andover, MA.
Brad formed a partnership in 1983, ICS Associates Inc., which built upon his passion for engineering. Among ICS' many accomplishments was their involvement in the Lowell Restoration project - specifically the design and construction of a new lock system for the canals. As President of ICS Associates, Brad led the company into the 1990's and 2000's as a key representative in the New England area for numerous corporations and their respective state-of-the-art environmental monitoring devices.
Brad is survived by his wife and high-school sweetheart, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann (Davis) Howard, with whom he celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on February 27th. Brad was the proud father of Kristine E. Connor and her husband Thomas of Hudson, MA, and Robert F. Howard and his wife Julianne of Tewksbury, MA. Brad was also the loving grandfather of Bradford T. Connor, age 4, and Andrew T. Howard, age 2e.
Mr. Howard is also survived by his brother John (Jack) Howard and his wife Edwina of Revere, MA and his sister Gail Doherty and her husband Dan of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Brad is also survived by his dear in-laws Donald and Phyllis Davis of Bradenton, FL, his aunt Doris Robidoux of West Hartford, CT, his brother-in-law Robert Davis and his wife Kathy of Millis, MA and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10am in the Chapel of the Old South Methodist Church, 6 Salem St. Reading. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours Wednesday 4-8pm in the Joseph Doherty Funeral Home 11 Linden St. READING. Parking is available in the municipal parking lot located behind Atlantic Supermarket on Haven St. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
