Brian Hayes of Wakefield, formerly of Reading, died peacefully after a brief illness on March 16, 2015. He was 59 years of age.
Born on December 27, 1955 in Wakefield, Brian was the beloved son of the late Thomas and Mary (Desmond) Hayes both of Reading, MA.
Brian was a 1974 Graduate of Reading Memorial High School where he excelled at writing and art and earned three varsity letters in wrestling. Brian had a great love of the outdoors. Whether hiking in the Muir Woods of Northern California or the White Mountains of New England, spending time on the coastal waters of New England, or swimming in a wood land lake, he possessed a deep love of nature, birds, insects and animals of all kinds. Anyone who took a walk in nature with Brian would have small things pointed out by him that they would have missed if hiking on their own.
His other great loves were his art and music. Brian loved to draw. His drawing ranged from copies of the works of the masters to his own unique brand of graphic comic books. As blues harp player for the Manny Trio Garage Band, Brian entertained all with his ripping solos on his Hohner Blues Band Harmonica and his eclectic vocal renditions of "Soul Man" and "Bad to the Bone".
Brian was always available to help a friend or stranger. For many years he was a fixture with his mother, Mary, at DAV sponsored holiday parties at the VA Hospitals and Chelsea Soldiers home. He also volunteered at Reading's Pack a Box program during the current Gulf Conflict. His generosity extended to friends, co-workers and strangers. If you needed a hand, a buck, a butt, or a beer, Brian was your man.
Brian was the dear brother of Tom Hayes and his wife Judy, John Hayes and his wife Alicia, Mark Hayes and his wife Julia and Ellen Crowton and her husband Russell. He was the loving uncle of John, Sarah and Colleen and the great uncle of Anna and Josephine. He is also survived by a strong community of many loving friends.
Brian will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday April 25, 2015, at Saint Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill Street, Reading at 10:30am, when the flowers of spring begin to sprout. In lieu of flowers, family and friends who wish to contribute in memory of Brian may do so to the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry, PO Box 1624, Wakefield, MA 01880 or online at http://www.wifoodpantry.org/donate-funds/
