Carol M. (White) Hale, of North Reading, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the age of 84 after a period of decline. Despite her failing health, Carol could always summon a bright smile for her family and those who cared for her - a gift she shared until her very last day.
Carol was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1941 to the late Dorothea (Knowlton) White and Waldo White. She was a graduate of Holyoke High School, Class of 1959, and went on to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she majored in English—pursuing her childhood dream of becoming a teacher—and earned her degree in 1963, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to teaching.
Carol was the beloved wife of William Hale, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage, mother to Caroline White Merrill; Jennifer White and her husband, John Turner; and stepmother to Suzanne Siggins and her husband, Arthur. She was a cherished grandmother to Courtney Jennings and her husband, Scott; Lincoln Merrill and his fiancée, Sharon Nath; Benjamin Merrill; Stella Turner; and Charlotte Turner, and a loving step‑grandmother to Liam Siggins and Ayla Siggins. She was also the proud great‑grandmother of Banks Jennings.
Carol dedicated 32 years of her professional life to education, teaching elementary school in the Reading, Massachusetts school system at Killam School and Barrows School. A compassionate and steady presence in the classroom, she was also known for her liveliness and humor—bringing warmth, patience, dedication, and genuine care to her students each day. She retired in 2002, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be felt by the many children and families she taught and inspired.
Known affectionately as “Grammie,” Carol had a true flair for fashion, always putting together polished, stylish outfits that earned her the playful nickname “Glammie” from some of her grandchildren. She cherished time spent at their home on Cape Cod with Bill and delighted in hosting and attending dinner parties with longtime friends, where laughter—often uproarious—filled the room. Carol loved her family deeply and was immensely proud of who they had become and who they were still becoming.
Above all else, Carol was devoted to her family. She will be remembered for her warmth, spirited personality, and the love she shared so generously. She will be profoundly missed.
A private service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Carol’s memory may make a gift to GBH (WGBH Boston), whose programming she loved, enjoyed, and supported for many years.
