Dr. Nancy J. Crandall of Stoneham passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, April 21, 2024. She was 80 years of age.
Born on Wednesday, March 1, 1944 in Schenectady, NY, Nancy is the loving daughter of the late Herbert Crandall and Rose (Landa) Crandall. Nancy is a warm, kind & gentle daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend who will be truly missed.
Nancy has been in love with music her entire life. She has played the flute, piano, and organ. In her younger years she sang in choirs and later conducted choirs. The organ, however, was her true passion.
Dr. Crandall graduated with a doctorate degree in organ literature and performance from Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. She studied other areas of music as well, most notably Choral Conducting at the Royal School of Church Music, Croydon, England; Music Analysis and French solfegé at the American Conservatory, Fontainebleau, France and Longy School of Music, Cambridge, MA; Theory/Analysis Lessons with Dr. Arthur Komar Boston, MA; Choral Directing/Voice Building at Lehrgang für Chorleitung und Chorische Stimmbildung, (Choral Directing/Voice Building) St. Moritz, Switzerland. She also held certificates from Kodaly Institute, New England Conservatory of Music.
She taught music at Kingsway College in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, Greater Boston Academy in Stoneham, MA (where she was an alumna), and was a Musical Specialist in the public school districts of Lawrence and Worcester, MA. She held several music director positions in various churches over her career. The most recent was with the First Baptist Church in Medford, MA. Upon her retirement from that position in June 2020, she was granted the honorary title of Organist Emerita.
She loved music and loved sharing her God given talent by either teaching others or for the enjoyment and blessing to those who heard her perform. She made friends wherever she went, and will be dearly missed.
Nancy is the sister of the late Warren Crandall and his surviving wife Karyl. The aunt of Sharon Hinckley and her husband Brodie and Stephen Crandall and his wife Trish, Nancy is the great aunt of Yuliya & Brock Hinckley.
A Graveside Service for the family was held on Friday, April 26th at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Family and friends are welcome to join a celebration of her life that will be held on Saturday, May 11th at 4 PM at the Stoneham Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
