Earle C. Young, of Stoneham, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday April 1, 2026. He was 94 years of age.
Born on July 10, 1931, in Augusta, Maine, Earle was the beloved son of Carroll Young and Hope Oberton, and stepson of George Oberton. He grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he met the love of his life, Shirley P. Young (Thompson), at a bowling alley. A chance meeting that blossomed into a lifelong marriage filled with love and devotion.
Earle and Shirley settled in Stoneham, where they spent the last 60 years building a life together and raising their family of five. A devoted husband and father, Earle worked tirelessly to support his family, holding two jobs for many years. By day, he worked in the banking industry as a loan officer, including positions at Depositors Trust Company in Medford, Century Bank in Somerville and Progressive Federal Credit Union in Revere. By night, he worked as a bartender at Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, serving guests during weddings, anniversaries, and many special occasions. He truly enjoyed the social atmosphere, the music, and being part of people’s happiest moments, forming many lasting friendships along the way. He was a very social and outgoing person who loved engaging in conversation with everyone he met.
Earle had a deep passion for Boston sports, especially the Bruins and the Red Sox. He cherished taking his children to games at the old Boston Garden and Fenway Park, creating lasting memories and passing on his enthusiasm to the next generation. Sports remained a constant and joyful topic of conversation throughout his life.
A man of strong character, Earle instilled in his children the values of hard work, integrity, trust, and the importance of family, always leading by example. His interests, many of which he shared with his children, included bowling, playing cards, horseshoes, reading the daily Boston Globe, and taking long walks on the golf course with family. During those walks, he took great pride in finding lost golf balls, turning it into a friendly competition and delighting in tallying his discoveries.
Family vacations at Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire were among his happiest times, especially fishing for bass with his sons and enjoying time together at the lake and surrounding attractions.
Earle was a lifelong member of the Stoneham Elks, where he formed many cherished friendships and enjoyed playing cards and spending time with fellow members. He was also a proud member of the Masons. Above all, he was immensely proud of his children and supported them wholeheartedly throughout their lives.
Earle proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, spending much of his service stationed in Japan.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley P. (Thompson) Young, his brothers, Jack Young and Roger Young, and his half-sister, Barbara Overton.
He is the cherished father of Shirley Febo and Deborah Thomson and her husband Kevin, Kenneth Young and his wife Bonnie, David Young and his wife, Kathleen, and Earle Young Jr. and his wife Kristina. He was a proud grandfather to13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, along with his extended family and many friends who will miss him dearly.
Earle will be remembered as a loving and devoted father, a hardworking provider, and a man who lived his life with integrity and heart. He took great pride in his family and all they accomplished.
