Edward "Eddie" "Pie" John Pinato

Edward “Eddie” “Pie” John Pinato, a lifelong Stoneham resident and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 in his home at the age of 93, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Born on Summer Street on May 19, 1932, Eddie lived a full life in service to his family, country, and the Town of Stoneham. Eddie graduated from Stoneham High School in 1950, having played both varsity football and basketball. He joined the Navy shortly after graduation and served on the USS Macon during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Naval Service after earning the nickname “Pie.”

Eddie was appointed temporary patrolman at the Stoneham Police Department in 1954. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a permanent patrolman in 1956, and sergeant detective in charge of criminal investigations in 1964. He also served as prosecutor in 1975.

Eddie was one of the founding members of the Northeast Area Detectives Association in 1974, an organization which began with nine departments and grew to encompass over eighty agencies by 1987. He received many commendations during his 33 years of service, retiring on July 20, 1987.

Following his retirement, Eddie served as chairman of the Stoneham Housing Authority. Eddie enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the horse races at Suffolk Downs. He looked forward to annual trips to Saratoga with his daughter Darlene. He loved to hunt and fish, taking routine hunting trips with friends. He loved spending time by the water, whether it be the pool, beach or lake. Eddie also enjoyed visiting the poker tables at Encore.

He proposed to his wife Lilian June Zaconni (June Pinato) on June 6, 1954 and they spent 71 loving years together. He is survived by his wife June and his three daughters, Debera Walsh and Dianne Vaughan both of Stoneham, and Susan Mello of Wakefield. He is the beloved grandfather of Lisa, Danielle, Katie, Julie, Steven, Jacey, Joie, and Jenna and great-grandfather of Alexis, Johnny, Summer, and Iyla. Lovingly called Papa by all. His generosity and sense of humor will be remembered for years to come. He is also survived by his devoted sons-in-law Joey Vaughan, Russ Mello, and Brian Destefano; and grandsons-in-law Myles, John, Brian, Chris, and Matt.

Preceding him in death were his parents John and Mary (Molly), his daughter Darlene Destefano, and son-in-law Frank Walsh.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a funeral mass celebrating Eddie’s Eternal Life on Monday, September 29th, 2025 at 10am in Saint Patrick Church, 71 Central Street Stoneham. Please go directly to church.
