Estelle M. Jamieson

April 24, 1903 — August 26, 2005

Mrs. Estelle Jamieson, at age 102, one of the area's oldest residents, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2005 at the Wingate Nursing Home in Reading. She had lived at her Reading residence nearby until a year age, when she entered Wingate.

Mrs. Jamieson was the widow of the late Leo Jamieson of Reading and Medford. She is survived by her son, Edward Leo Jamieson of New York City, and her daughter, Thelma McCulloch of Reading; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Another daughter, Jane, died at the age of 9 in 1947.

Mrs. Jamieson was born in Frenchport, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of Edward and Jane Mullen. She was the last survivor of a family of four sons and three daughters. She came to the United States in 1923 after graduating from high school and business college on P.E.I.

She married her husband in 1929, and the couple lived in Medford for most of their married life before moving to Reading in 1982 to be near their daughter Thelma and her family. Her daughter cared for her during the last years of her life.

Mrs. Jamieson was a matriarchal figure to her family, taking great interest until the last in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and delighting in conversations with them about their interests, their friends, their jobs and, in the case of the great grandchildren, their plans for school and college. She continued her longtime interest in local and world news, which she faithfully followed on TV despite her failing eyesight. She celebrated her 90th and 100th birthdays with large parties attended by farflung relatives and friends.
