Frances M. (Oppedisano) "Fran" Ghergia

Frances M. (Oppedisano) “Fran” Ghergia of Stoneham passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at her home on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025. She was 77 years old.

Born on Monday, January 20, 1947, in Grotteria, Reggio Calabria, Italy, Fran was the loving daughter of the late Antonio Oppedisano and Theresa (Pelagio) Oppedisano. Fran was a warm, kind, gentle daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend who will be deeply missed.

Fran immigrated to the United States with her family at a young age, settling in the north end of the Boston area. She worked tirelessly to support her loved ones while maintaining a close connection to her Italian roots. Fran took pride in her role as a homemaker and family matriarch, where her love and devotion were felt in every shared meal, holiday gathering, and piece of advice offered. Her home was always a place of warmth and comfort.

Fran had a unique ability to see the needs of others and never hesitated to take in those who needed help. Her home and heart were open to anyone in need of a meal, a bed, or a kind word, and she embodied the spirit of generosity and compassion.

Her compassion extended beyond people; Fran was deeply committed to the care and well-being of animals. She worked closely with local agencies to provide foster care for misplaced and sick cats, offering them a safe haven and the love they needed to heal and thrive. Her dedication to helping animals was a testament to her boundless kindness and empathy.

Her unwavering faith and generous spirit were evident in all she did. Fran’s love for gardening, cooking, and crafting brought beauty and joy to those around her. Above all, she cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren who were the light of her life.

Fran was the beloved wife of Alfred J. Ghergia. She was the devoted mother of Kristin Scioli and her husband Frank, and Mark Ghergia and his wife Suzy. The cherished grandmother of Savannah Price, Matthew Ghergia and his wife Cori, Lily Scioli, Melissa Navarrette and her husband Francisco, and Keri Grace Rogers, Fran was the great-grandmother of Mia and Mikey. She was the dear sister of Joseph Oppedisano and his wife Anne, Pat Oppedisano, Dom Oppedisano and his wife Linda, Anthony Oppedisano and his wife Teresa, Lee Moscillo and her husband Joseph, and Theresa Comeau and her husband Robert. Fran is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
