Stoneham resident George Angelo DiChiara, 95, died in his home on the morning of Feb. 7th, 2014.
Mr. DiChiara was born December 20th, 1918 in East Boston, MA to parents the late Nicola DiChiara and Philomena (Gagliardo) DiChiara.
He graduated from East Boston High School in 1936 before embarking on a lifelong career of military service. Mr. DiChiara served the length of World War II with the US Army, and enlisted in the US Air Force, serving from 1952-1970. Upon military retirement in 1970, Mr. DiChiara began a 14 year-long career with the United States Postal Service.
George lived in East Boston until leaving home to participate in the Civilian Conservation Corps when he was 18. He married Carmella Lentini in 1952. The couple lived around the world, from Pearl Harbor, HI; Cape Cod, MA; Alcoa, TN; Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, MA; Okinawa, JP; and Las Vegas, NV before settling in Stoneham, MA in 1974. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on September, 28, 2013.
He is survived by his beloved wife Carmella (Lentini) DiChiara. George was the devoted father of Edward DiChiara, Lisa Palmere and her husband Peter, Lori DiChiara, David DiChiara and his wife Alicia. He was the cherished grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of one great grandson. The dear brother of Matteo DiChiara, George DiChiara and the late Alfonse DiChiara, Mary Maffie, Alfred and James DiChiara, George was the brother in law of Kathleen DiChiara. He was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
His family wrote: "George was a father to us all. His warmth and kindness could fill a room. He lived honestly, thoughtfully, and with grace."
Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street (RT 28), STONEHAM on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating George's Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central Street, Stoneham at 10:00am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the Family on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 3– 8pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and handicapped elevator are available. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
