Hazel E. Smith

October 14, 1910 — June 6, 2007

Hazel E. (Gillis) Smith, 96, of Stoneham, passed on, June 6, 2007 at her home, with her children at her side. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 74 years, Andrew Robinson "Bob" Smith. Hazel was the loving mother of three daughters Roberta (Smith) Marion, Betty (Smith) Langley, Jean (Smith) and her husband Douglas Evans, and one son, Peter R. and his wife Shirley (Taylor) Smith.





Hazel was cherished by her 14 Grandchildren: Nancy (Heyer) Grund, Steve Heyer, Wayne Marion, Kathe (Marion) Gallant, and Paul Marion, all of Maine. Rick Langley of California, Susan (Langley) Contant, Cindy (Langley) Wilbur, Dave Langley, Karen (Langley) Perry, all of Maine. Lane Evans, and Scott Evans, both of New Hampshire, Grant Evans of Maine, Michelle (Smith) of New Hampshire.





Hazel also had 13 Great Grandchildren: Jarrod Costopolous of California, Harmony (Costopolous)Gagnier of New Hampshire, Emily (Heyer) Hills, Elizabeth (Heyer) West, Jodie (Marion) Stone, Dan Contant, Eliza Wilbur, Carl Wilbur, Nicholas Langley, Sarah Perry, and Jacob Perry, all of Maine, Jacob and Tyler Evans, both of New Hampshire.





Hazel was also survivevd by five Great, Great grandchildren: Sofia and Yazmin Gagnier, both of New Hampshire, Chase Stone, Travis West, and Skylar Hills, all of Maine, and many beloved nephews and nieces.





She was predeceased by her siblings, Chester B. Gillis of Maine, Alice Mae (Gillis) Coburn of Connecticut, and Alan F. Gillis of Maine.





Hazel's life was her family, her home, and helping her husband,"Smitty" with his Canteen Truck, serving many businesses as he traveled about in Stoneham.





Her passion was downhill skiing, which began in 1928 and continued into her 80's. At one time belonged to the Innitou Ski Club, in Woburn. She was also a member of the National Ski Patrol. Her most favorite ski area was Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch New Hampshire.





Many other of Hazel's interests included camping trips with her family, canoeing, fishing, and hunting. Square dancing was another passion that continued for about 20 years starting in the early 60's to about 1980's, meeting many new friends and traveling to other square dance areas. At one time they and their children and spouses made up their own "square" at the Convention in Portland Maine.





Mom had many homemaking interests and skills such as cooking, sewing, rug braiding, rug hooking, knitting crocheting, tatting, etc. She enjoyed the "Miniatures" world, helping her daughters at dollhouse shows and collecting her own fine miniature furniture.





She also loved to travel and went on many trips with her sister Alice Mae Coburn.





There will be a Memorial Gathering at her home, 1:00 PM, 7 July 2007.
