Henry W. "Bill" Clements of Reading passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2009. He was 76 years of age.
Born on August 17, 1932, Bill was the son of the late Harry Wilbur and Clare V. (McGillicuddy) Clements of Roxbury. Bill grew up attending the Mission Church where he served as an altar boy and faithful member of the Choir. He graduated from the Mission Church High School in 1949.
Bill served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 - 1955, when he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant and decorated with The Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, The United Nations Service Medal, & The National Defense Service Medal.
With the aid of the GI bill he attended Boston College at night while working days at a city hospital. He graduated from BC in 1963 with a degree in History.
After graduation he began a long career in transportation management starting at the New England Motor Rate Bureau in Arlington. In later years he worked for M&M, Holmes and Plymouth Rock transportation companies. For the past 10 years, until his death, he served as an Administration Review Officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Dept of Public Utilities.
Pre deceased by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn (Harris) Clements of Everett, MA, they lived in Reading for 43 years. In addition to raising his three sons, he dedicated much of his life to coaching the youth of Reading. He spent many years volunteering his knowledge and skill to the Girls Youth Basketball League and most notably coaching Reading Youth Softball, including their summer travel teams. Highlights included his years with the Dolphins and the champion Reading Rage.
In addition to sports his passions included literature, classical music, opera, walking and gardening. He was a communicant of St Athanasius Church and a supporter of the Reading Public Library.
Bill was the devoted father of David W. Clements of California, Gary M. Clements and his wife Denise of Harvard, Gregg H. Clements and his wife Paula of Andover. He was the cherished grandfather of Zachary, Harry, Patrick, Jordan, Emily and Jack. Dear brother of Elaine Lawless of Waltham and Gail Brown and her husband Stanley of Milford. Bill was also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law, cousins, devoted friends and colleagues
Funeral from the Doherty - Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Monday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating Bill's life in St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St. Reading at 10am. Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share remembrances with the family on Sunday from 1-5pm. Parking attendants will be on duty and parking is also available in the municipal parking lot on Linden St. Interment Wood End Cemetery, Reading.
