Henry G. Der, age 94, formerly of Stoneham, died peacefully in Danvers, MA on May 6, 2015.
Henry was born in Canton, China, son of the late Woo Shee and George M. Der. He was the beloved brother of Mary and the late Hong Har, Peter, John, Jennie, Paul and Helen. He is survived by daughters Melissa Der and her husband Rex Green, and Cynthia DeWolfe and her husband Jeffrey. He was the cherished grandfather of Boyd, Trent, Meredith, Alexander and Ava. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
Henry emigrated to the United States with his family in 1921 at 6 months old, arriving in the port of San Francisco before settling in Fall River, MA. His family eventually relocated to Medford, MA, where his father opened a Chinese restaurant. He attended Tufts University, where he captained the soccer and wrestling teams and played golf, and graduated in 1943 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He then worked for B.F. Goodrich ("the Hood") making shoe molds for a year before taking a hiatus from this job to enlist in the US Navy. He served on a supply ship during WWII for two years. Henry returned to B.F. Goodrich following an honorable discharge from the Navy and worked there for nearly thirty years. In 1953, he also began working at the China Moon Restaurant which was opened by his father that year. Henry left B.F. Goodrich in the early 1970's and formed his own shoe mold company, Moldcraft Industries, Inc., with a few other former B.F. Goodrich coworkers. Henry worked tirelessly with a smile at the China Moon, eventually as one of the owners and as host, for over 50 years. Henry's passions included traveling to Hawaii, having delicious dinners at Campbell's Restaurant in Waikiki, spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren), watching sports, working at the China Moon and helping others.
