Irene (Planeta) Algiers

Irene "Penny" (Planeta) Algiers passed away suddenly at her home in Stoneham. She was 85 years of age.

Born March 2, 1930 in Norwich, Connecticut, Irene was the loving daughter of the late John and Caroline Planeta. Irene grew up in Norwich, Ct where she attended Norwich Free Academy. NFA would always hold a special place in her heart. After graduating from NFA she attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, Connecticut. Irene earned her degree and became a registered nurse. She worked at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford and spent the final portion of her nursing career at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Irene was an accomplished seamstress. She spent countless hours making all forms of clothing: hats, dresses, sweaters, curtains, etc. She most enjoyed sewing and knitting clothes and costumes for her three grandchildren. Irene also loved gardening. Her rock garden in the front yard of her home of 62 years was her pride and joy.

Irene was the wife of the late Paul Algiers, Sr. She was the devoted mother of Paul Algiers, Jr. and his wife Dorothy, David Algiers and his fiancée Joanne Shaughnessy and Robert Algiers, all from Massachusetts. Irene was the cherished grandmother of David Algiers, Jr., Jacqueline Algiers and Paul Algiers, III. Irene was the sister of Patricia Mioduszewski of Norwich, CT. She is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass celebrating Irene's Eternal Life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 10:00am in Saint Patrick Church, 71 Central Street, Stoneham. Friends and family are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the family on Friday, March 20, 2015 from 4-8pm in the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street, Stoneham.
