James Govatsos

James Govatsos of Stoneham passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009 at his home. He was 98 years of age.
Born in Stoneham, James was the loving son of the late Nellie and Augustas Govatsos. James was a warm and caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be sorely missed.
During World War II, James proudly defended our freedom by serving in the United States Army.
James was very active in The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. He was an avid golfer. He was a musician who played with Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis, Jr. to name a few through the Big Band Era. James was also a piano technician to many famous recording artists. He invented piano tools including the hammer extractor. He continued to tune pianos until he was 91 years old.
James was the beloved husband of the late Athena (Pappas) Govatsos. He was the devoted father of Andrew Govatsos and his wife Maureen of Salem, N.H. and Charles Govatsos of Stoneham. He was the cherished grandfather of Jim, Andrea, Nick and C.J. James was the uncle of Charles Govatos, Alexis Winnell, Marie Winnell, Helen Costas, Gary Pappas, Leslie McGowan and Stacey Martinelli.
Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home 482 Main St. (RT28) STONEHAM Tuesday at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Service Celebrating James' Life in The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church 70 Montvale Ave. Woburn at 11 a.m. Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share remembrances with the family on Monday from 3-7 pm in the funeral home. Parking attendants will be available. Interment with Military Honors in Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham.
