James E. McAuley

November 21, 1925 — March 25, 2009

James E. McAuley of Reading passed on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 83 years of age.



Born in Somerville, James was the son of the late Margaret (Blake) McAuley and Frederick McAuley. James was a warm and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be sorely missed.



James worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Lexington for 27 years. James enjoyed spending time with his 11 children, his grandchildren and spending family vacations together. James took pride in his accomplishments as a self-taught carpenter. An avid cook, "Big Jim" created many meals for his family and friends. "Big Jim" also enjoyed hosting 4th of July Cookouts, helping to establish the cherished Pleasant Street Neighborhood Get Togethers.



During WWII, James proudly defended our freedom by serving in the United States Navy.



James was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Ann (Pepin) McAuley. He was the devoted father of James M. McAuley, Kathie Wardrip, Regina Downing, Elaine Mitchell, Tricia McKenna, Barbara Arnone, Tom McAuley, Mary Roberts, Brian McAuley, Theresa Quilty and Mark McAuley. He was the cherished grandfather of 24 and great grandfather of 4. He was the dear brother of the late Margaret Doyle, Helen Winter, Ethel Batchelder and Adelaide Murphy. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.



Funeral from the Joseph Doherty - Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Monday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating James' life in St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St. Reading at 10am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the family on Sunday from 3-7pm in the funeral home. Parking attendants will be available. Interment Charles Lawn Memorial Park, Reading.
