James L. Murphy of Malden and Stoneham passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023. He was 92 years of age.
Born on Monday, December 29, 1930 in Boston, James was the loving son of the late Daniel Murphy and Alice (Stingel) Murphy. James was a kind, loyal and gentle son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Jim was raised in Malden, MA. After graduating, Jim’s first job was a milkman delivering milk for United Farmers. In 1951, he married his sweetheart, Joan and the two of them settled down in Malden to raise their family. Shortly after marrying, Jim eagerly enlisted in the Navy, serving in the Korean War, as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the U.S.S. Charles R. Ware destroyer ship. After leaving active duty he joined the Navy reserves and landed his dream job at the Massachusetts Port Authority. He retired from the Port Authority after 30 years working on the Tobin Bridge in the maintenance garage. Jim and Joan lived in Malden together for 50 years before selling the family home and moving to Stoneham. They quickly became “Snow Birds” vacationing in Florida for 20+ years.
Jim loved playing pool, cribbage, and a game of cards. He especially loved family gatherings, telling a good joke, and watching his favorite sport teams. Jim’s most cherished times was spending time with his grandchildren.
James was the loving and devoted husband of the late Joan (Hanifan) Murphy for 66 years. He was the devoted father of Carol (Murphy) Flanagan and her husband Michael, Michael Murphy and the late James "Larry" Murphy and the late Robert Murphy. The cherished grandfather "Poppy Jim" of Erin Quinn, Patrick Flanagan, Kelli Gelsomini, Katelyn Centore, Catherine Chandler and Michael Murphy, James was the doting great grandfather of Alli, Morgan, Ella, Milani, Emma, and Louis. He was the dear brother of the late Donald Murphy, Clifton Hatch, Jean Flynn and Dorothy Doherty. James was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share memories with James’ Family on Friday April 28th from 3:00 to 7:00pm in the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main St. (RT 28) STONEHAM. Parking attendants and elevator are available.
A Funeral Mass Celebrating James' Eternal Life will be held on Saturday, April 29th at 9am in St. Patrick Church 71 Central St. Stoneham. Please gather directly at church. Interment Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
