James W. Sharkey

February 20, 1930 — October 8, 2012

James W. Sharkey of Reading, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Winchester Hospital. He was 82 years of age.





Born in Belmont, James was the loving son of the late William A. Sharkey and Ellen (Harrington) Sharkey. James was a warm and caring son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be sadly missed.





James was a dedicated and devoted firefighter for the Reading Fire Department, retiring as a Captain. During the Korean War, James proudly defended our freedom by serving as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force.





James was the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Hickey) Sharkey. He was the devoted father of Timothy Sharkey and his wife Bridget of Lynnfield, Maureen Bonnell and her husband Paul of Haverhill, Terrance Sharkey and his wife Elaine, Patrick Sharkey and his wife Darlene all of Reading, Mary Long and her husband Joseph of Wilmington, and the late Kathleen Benson and David Robertson. He was the father in law of Edward Benson of Wilmington. James was the cherished grandfather of 17, great grandfather of 2, and the dear brother of the late David Sharkey, Sophia Richard and her husband Eugene. He was the brother in law of Dolores Sharkey of NJ. James was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.





Funeral from the Doherty -Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Friday at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating James' Eternal Life in St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St., Reading at 10:30 am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the Family on Thursday from 3-7 pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants will be available. Interment with Military Honors, Wood End Cemetery, Reading.
