Jane Lavinia (Symonds) Nalwalk

July 21, 1939 — January 25, 2017

Jane was a resident of Reading, MA for 46 years; beloved wife of Theodore Joseph Nalwalk for 53 years, now deceased, and Mother of Thomas Ezekiel Nalwalk, also of Reading, MA. She was the Daughter of Impe Elvira (Arvo) and Gifford Harvey Symonds, both deceased, of New Jersey and California.

She was born in the City of Summit, NJ and grew up in the Town of Short Hills, NJ. She attended Kent Place School in Summit, NJ. She graduated from Smith College, in Northampton, MA. Her field of study encompassed Biology, Hematology, Histology, Microbiology, and Physiology.

Her professional experience included working as a Lab Assistant for various Bio-Medical Research Projects in the Boston Area. During that time, she also worked with her Husband. She worked at Winchester Hospital in Winchester, MA. for many years and later for 35 years at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center (formerly Lahey Clinic) in Burlington, MA. Her various jobs included: working on several hospital floors, as an Information Coordinator, Executive Secretary to the Robert E. Wise, MD, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Tumor Registrar, and a Lead Researcher in the field of Urology Research.

She was a member of several Civic and Professional Organizations, which included: Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands; TASL (Take A Second Look) Boston Harbor Winter Bird Count; President of CRANE (Cancer Registry of New England); President of the Reading College Club, a Charitable Organization raising Scholarship Monies; Regent of General Israel Putnam Chapter in Danvers, MA DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).

Her hobbies included: doing puzzles, crossword puzzles, gardening, wood gathering and cutting, furniture refinishing, reading books (both fiction and nonfiction), listening to classical music and singing in choirs, tennis, swimming, beach combing, hiking, camping on the Boston Harbor Islands, cross country skiing, sewing, quilting, knitting, various arts and crafts. Her travels included Europe, California, Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), Florida, Bermuda, New York, and New England. She was a devout member of Saint Patrick's Parish in Stoneham, MA, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Religious Educator, and a member of the Choir. She enjoyed friendship with many friends throughout her life.

She is survived by Her Only Son Thomas Ezekiel Nalwalk of Reading, MA;Her Sister Anne (Symonds) Hotchkiss of Williamson, NY; Her Nieces: Diane Burns and her Husband Patrick-her Only Son Joshua Labove, and Judy and her Husband John Liestman, both of Sodus, NY; Her Nephew David and his Wife Delilah Hotchkiss of Roswell, GA and their Three Sons: Micah, Philip, and Andrew; Her Nieces: Lynn Symonds and her Daughter Sarah Symonds-Whight, and Kate (Symonds) and her Husband Marcin Whitman, all from CA. She is also survived by Relatives from her Husband's Family: James Krowka and his Wife Gwen from Dexter, OR; John Krowka from Boonsboro, MD; Marjory Zaik from Easthampton, MA; and John Zaik from Los Angeles, CA.

Funeral from the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Thursday, February 2nd at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Jane's Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church ,71 Central St. Stoneham. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with the Family on Wednesday, February 1st from 5-7pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and ramped entrance are available. The Interment will be private and will take place at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Northampton, MA. TBA.
