Jennie Roche, 73, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, surrounded by family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Jennie was born on September 2, 1952, in Ipswich, MA, to Willard Douglas Stantial and Jane Norwood Stantial. The family later moved to Ohio, where she attended school and graduated from Berea High School in 1970. She went on to earn her degree from Bowling Green State University in 1974.
Jennie married Joseph Roche on June 6, 1974, and together they welcomed their sons Matthew and Joshua. She was a devoted mother who treasured every moment of raising her boys, prioritizing family time, education, and countless adventures. After many years at home lovingly raising her boys, she bravely returned to school, earning her Master of Social Work from Salem State University in 1998. Though she and Joe later divorced, they remained united in their love and dedication to their family.
Jennie’s life was defined by purpose and heart. As both a teacher and later a social worker, she found profound fulfillment in uplifting mothers and young children through life’s challenges. Her compassion, empathy, and dedication touched innumerable lives, creating a legacy of love and kindness that endures.
She cherished her friendships—whether with her knitting and stitching group, her treasured “Berthaz,” or the many friends she gathered along life’s journey. Most of all, Jennie loved being “Jij” to her grandchildren. She was the kind of grandmother who got down on the floor to play, and the children gravitated toward her joyful spirit. Though her family grieves the time they lost with her, they are deeply grateful for the memories they shared and will forever cherish the photos and videos of her playing with the grandchildren she adored.
In 2006, Jennie met her partner, Steve Young, through mutual friends. Over 19 wonderful years together, they shared adventures, laughter, and countless cherished moments. Many of their happiest times were spent at Steve’s family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, where Jennie found peace and joy. Steve’s devotion to Jennie was unwavering; he ensured she could enjoy the lake as long as possible and stood by her side with steadfast loyalty throughout her illness. Jennie’s family is deeply grateful for the love and devotion Steve gave her, and they will cherish making new memories with him while keeping Jennie’s spirit alive in their hearts.
Jennie is survived by her partner Steve, her sons Matthew (Bridget) Roche of Acton, MA, and their children Hunter, Thomas, and Nathan; and Joshua (Bridget) Roche of Reading, MA, and their children Conor and Nora Jane. She also leaves behind her brothers, Sam (Gwen) Stantial of Beverly, MA, and Doug (Karen) Stantial of Cumming, GA; her treasured cousin Kim Sears; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved deeply. She was predeceased by her parents, Doug and Jane.
In keeping with her generous spirit, Jennie’s family has donated her brain to medical research at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center, hoping to advance vital research and deepen understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Jennie’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, continuing her legacy of compassion and support for others. The family extends heartfelt thanks to her caregivers at Brooksby Village—nurses, doctors, aides, hospice staff, and the many kind faces who supported Jennie with compassion and love during her final years.
Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with Jennie's family on Wednesday, September 17, from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Doherty - Barile Family Funeral Home, at 11 Linden St. READING. Parking attendants and elevator are available. All are welcome to attend.
