Joanne M. (Camelio) Simpson, of Dracut, formerly of Stoneham, died Thursday, March 31, 2022 D'Youville Nursing & Rehabilitation in Lowell. She was 79 years of age.
Joanne was born on December 27, 1942 in Cambridge, a daughter of the late Anthony and Helen (Landi) Camelio. Raised in Somerville she was a graduate of Somerville High School with the class of 1960 and then earned her nursing degree from Somerville Hospital School of Nursing in 1963.
She married Vernon L. Simpson on April 4, 1964 in her home parish of St. Catherine of Genoa. They lived many years in Stoneham before moving to Tewksbury and the last three years in Dracut. Vernon died on March 9, 2013.
The role of mother and nurse often goes hand in hand but for Joanne Simpson it was her life's work. In addition to raising her five children she was a maternity ward nurse at Somerville Hospital and later Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for over twenty-five years before retiring.
Joanne loved the company of family and friends, following her grand kids at their sporting and school events, a good Celtics game win, a nice dinner out and a movie, and lastly, a dish of Brigham's chocolate ice cream.
She leaves her children, Christine V. DelRossi, Suzanne M. Blackwell D'Arrigo and her husband Joseph, Mark V. Simpson and his wife Lisa, Karen R. Price, and Michelle L. Sweeney and her husband Paul and; her grandchildren, Danielle DelRossi, Nick and Ryan Blackwell, Katelyn and Abi Simpson, David, Corey and Kelsey Seamans, Cameron Price and Paul Sweeney; her siblings, Anthony Camelio and his wife Mary Lou, Robert Camelio and his wife Peggy and Janice DiPietro and her husband Joseph. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home 482 Main St. (RT28) STONEHAM on 9 am on Friday, April 8th followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Joanne's Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church 71 Central St. Stoneham at 10 am. Interment will follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share memories with her family on Thursday, April 7th, 2022 from 4 pm to 8 pm in the funeral home. Parking attendants and elevator available.
