John Joseph Boretti, age 73, a resident of Southport NC for the past 18 years, passed away on November 16th SECU Hospice House of Brunswick -Lower Cape Fear Hospice, surrounded by his loving family after a struggle with cancer. John was born in Medford, MA to Julia Brown Boretti and Theodore Henry Boretti on, March 1st, 1945.
John attended West Point and was commissioned upon graduation, serving in Germany, Vietnam, and Key West, FL, and being discharged after 4 years with the rank of Captain. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 51 years, Linda Fowler Boretti, 3 loving sons, John Christian, wife Jennifer of Hilton Head, SC, Matthew, wife Erin, of Raleigh, NC, and Michael, wife Kristen, of Sudbury, MA and 8 much loved grand-children Megan, Alexandra, Tessa, Ryan, Ella, Brayden, Isabella and Jensen, and his beloved sister, Mary Boretti, SNDdeN. John was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Tom, Paul, and Edward.
John was recognized at West Point for his many athletic accomplishments, receiving 9 varsity letters in soccer, hockey, and baseball, and the Outstanding Athlete Award in the class of 1967, and later being inducted into the Army West Point Hall of Fame in 2008. After his discharge from the Army John worked for the paper division of Procter and Gamble for 30 years, first in Cheboygan, MI and then Mehoopany, PA.
John especially treasured coaching and mentoring kids; he coached baseball and soccer for many years, from youth levels through high school, and was instrumental in building the youth and high school soccer programs in Tunkhannock PA. Upon retirement to NC he put his athletic prowess into his golf game where he made many enduring friendships. His family, faith and friends were foremost in his life. He will miss most watching with Linda his grandchildren grow, but certainly enjoyed sharing with his family the unprecedented success of the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics in the last number of years. John will always be remembered for his ability to make people feel valued and good about themselves.
Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street (RT 28) Stoneham on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 9am. A funeral mass celebrating John's Eternal Life will be held at St. Joseph's Church, 114 High St., Medford, at 10am.
Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with John's Family at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 7pm.
Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
