Obituary

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of John Herbert on June 29, 2024, after a sudden illness. John became part of the Communitas family at the tender age of 17 in 1980. A longtime resident of Lebanon Street in Melrose, he was one of the first to move into a new house on Rustic Lane in Reading in 2012. He was a long-time participant in both our Career Services and Day Hab programs in Wakefield, leaving behind many friends and staff who loved him dearly, as well as his loving family. Communitas is deeply grateful to John's family for allowing us to be part of his life.

John was affectionately known as the Mayor of the Day Program. He would help others walk in from the vans and guide them to their classrooms, often knowing exactly where everyone needed to be. Sometimes, he'd decide, "I'm gonna be in this classroom today," and stay there for the day. He loved watching "The Price is Right," enthusiastically yelling "COME ON DOWN!" and he had a passion for dancing.

John was a force of nature, with a smile and aura that radiated warmth and love. He possessed a quiet strength that he generously shared, offering the most healing hugs. He showed us the true essence of strength, love, and compassion daily, regardless of the challenges he faced. John taught us that there is always something to be grateful for, simply because we have a life to live, and he inspired us to live it well.

While home at Rustic Lane, John was the cornerstone, always inspiring peers and staff to live better, do better, and love better. Some may have thought that John did not have a voice, but those who knew him understood the power of his gentle guidance. He was always himself, never pretending to be anyone else. John was our very own Superman—he loved to dance, smile, and be a goofball. Above all, he was a natural caregiver, giving his all to us.

When people say, "I'm sorry for your loss, I didn't know John," I always think, "I'm sorry for your loss, then," because those who knew him are better for it.

John is survived by his siblings Marie, Michael, Patty, their families and the whole Communitas family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of celebration and remembrance of John on Thursday, July 25th in the Cota Funeral Home, 335 Park St., (corner of Park St. and Rte. 28), North Reading at Reading line from 3pm to 6pm.
