John T. Sweeney

September 28, 1934 — July 12, 2006

John "Jack" Sweeney, a retired United States Administrative Law Judge, died Wednesday, July 12th, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington after a long illness at 71 years of age.

A devoted and active alumnus of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he had recently celebrated his much anticipated 50th reunion with many of his dearest long term friends and his wife of 48 years, Claudette, also a UMASS graduate.

He had served 25 years as a US Administrative Law judge in the Boston office. Previously he had worked as chief legal officer for Mass. Board of Higher Education, Executive Director for Mass Commission on Aging and a secretary to Governor Endicott Peabody, 1962 - 1964.

A graduate of Everett High School, UMASS Amherst and Suffolk University Law School, Jack had been active in numerous civic and political activities in Reading and Boston, but was most proud of his work for UMASS as a past member of the Board of Trustees, past president of the Amherst Alumni Association, and a variety of other committees for his Alma Mater.

Besides his wife, Claudette, he is survived by his beloved children; Jacqueline Gordon and her husband Clayton of Odessa, Washington, James and his wife Michelle of Woburn, Jeffrey and his wife Corisa of Billerica, grandchildren, Matthew and Makayla, brother Stephen and his wife Genevive of Hamilton, sister Claire of Winthrop and nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Jack's life will be held on Saturday July 15th, at 10 am in St. Agnes Church 186 Woburn Street, READING. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend.
