Joseph E. Carroll

Joseph E. Carroll of Stoneham passed away on Friday, May 25, 2012 at home with his devoted wife and loving family by his side. He was 87 years of age.





Born in Randolph, Joseph was the son of the late Thomas and Marguerite (Ashe) Carroll. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine and Anna.





Joseph attended Saint Patrick's Grammar School and was an altar boy at Saint Patrick's Church. He graduated from Stoneham High School Class of 1942.

During WWII, Joseph proudly served as a Staff Sargent in the 13th Corps., United States Army.





Joseph was a longtime U.S. Customs Inspector, working at Logan Airport, Manchester Airport, and Hanscom Air Force Base as well as piers in East Boston and Gloucester. He retired in 1990 as the U.S. Customs Port Director in Gloucester, MA.





He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a lifetime member of the VFW in Saugus. He belonged to Saint Patrick's Holy Name Society, and was the Treasurer of the Melrose Chapter of the AARP.





He enjoyed politics and in 1960 was a delegate for John F. Kennedy at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. In his lifetime he enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, genealogy, and collecting old postcards of Stoneham. He was an avid reader and a history buff. He was also a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins. He had a quick wit and a ready laugh and more than anything enjoyed being home and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a warm and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be sadly missed.





He leaves his wife of 63 years, Jeannette (Bourque) Carroll; son, Joseph Jr. and his wife Ellen of Londonderry, NH; daughter, Maureen Desveaux and her husband Rich of Pepperell; son Michael and his wife Donna of Pepperell; daughter Linda Gosselin and her husband Kenneth of Weare, NH; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the dear brother of Thomas and his wife Theresa of Wilmington, Madeline Breen and the late Raymond of Stoneham, William and his wife Angela of Quincy, Rita Newitt and her husband Carl of Stoneham, Paul and his wife MaryAnne of Salem, NH. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.





Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main St. (RT 28) Stoneham, Friday at 9 am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Joseph's Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St. Stoneham at 10am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the family on Thursday from 4-7 pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants will be available. Interment with Military Honors will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Stoneham.
