Joseph A. Maiella

Joseph A. Maiella, of Wilmington, formerly of Somerville and a 1951 graduate of Somerville High School, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 23, 2026. He was 92 years of age.

Joseph is the beloved husband of Nina (Cucinotta) Maiella. He is the cherished father of Joseph Maiella and his wife Kellie and Paul Maiella and his wife Leslie. Loving grandfather of Charlie, Andrew, Isabelle and Zachary Maiella, and step grandchildren Ava and Julia Farrell. Devoted son of the late Albert and Clara (Senesi) Maiella. Dear brother of Alfred Maiella and his late wife Laura, the late Rosemarie Armstrong and her late husband Frank. Brother-in-law of Leonard Ciaccio and his wife Josie, Vita Cucinotta and her late husband Domenic and the late Domenic Tavilla and his late wife Mary. Former Father-in-law of Catherine Maiella. Joseph is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Worked for years as a driver and manager of the family business. Al Maiella Trucking, delivering to many First National Supermarket Stores. Later, he worked for Compo Industries in Waltham, MA which specialized as a supplier of footwear manufacturing equipment and shoe cementing machinery. He was employed as a Traffic Manager for Diggins & Rose Moving Systems out of Hudson, NH. Joe ended his professional career by starting JP Air Freight which was a courier service delivering parcels to businesses within the greater Boston area.

Was an active member of Wilmington's Son's of Italy and loved being part of the Wilmington Senior Center's singing group.

Joseph served as a member of the United States Army entering November 12, 1953, and discharged on November 10, 1955.

Traveling to destinations such as Italy, Hawaii, and the Caribbean- often on memorable cruises shared with his wife, Nina, and close friends-was one of his true passions. He enjoyed every moment and always looked forward to their next excursion.

Devoted numerous years and countless hours volunteering as a youth sports coach in Wilmington for both basketball and baseball. He was instrumental in launching what is known today as the Wilmington Travel Basketball Organization.

Loved spending time at home with his family, summer cookouts, watching his grandchildren play sports, and shooting baskets with anyone who would challenge him.  Christmas Eve was a treasured tradition for him with large family gatherings held at his childhood home in Somerville and later at his home in Wilmington. He loved passing on the tradition to his children and grandchildren.

Enjoyed weekly Friday night card games with the guys and was an avid sports fan and supporter of all four major Boston teams.

Bowling was another hobby of his, specifically 10-Pin bowling. He often bragged about the day he had a perfect game scoring 300.

Funeral from the Barile Cota Family Funeral Home 335 Park St. NORTH READING on Friday July 31st, 2026 at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Joseph's Eternal Life in St. Theresa Church 63 Winter St. North Reading at 10:30. Interment with Military Honors to take place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
