Julia A (McLean) O'Brien passed away peacefully after a long illness surrounded by her family on March 12, 2021. Her courage and humor through it all were an inspiration. She grew up in Medford and was the daughter of Frank and Dorothea (Leonard) McLean. She attended Girls Catholic High School and Chandler School for Women. She was married to her loving and caring husband, Hugh, for over 49 years and lived in Stoneham. She had three children: Matthew and his wife Kimberly, Kerry and her husband Todd Goulette, and Colleen and her husband Patrick McGeown. Julia had eight wonderful grandchildren: Cassidy, Jillian & Amelia Goulette; Conor & Rian McGeown; Kate O'Brien & two angels in heaven, Thomas & Owen O'Brien. She leaves five siblings: Frank & Ruth McLean, Malcolm & Patricia McLean, Denise & Robert Egan, Leonard & Carol McLean and the late Maryann Hanrahan. Also, her dear cousin John and Shaune Hall, two brothers-in-law, Edward Aprile and Edward Hanrahan, and her dear friend of sixty years, Roberta (Haney) Cullen . Julia also leaves several nieces and nephews: Christopher, Stephen & Lauren Aprile; Jeffrey & Michael McLean; Kate Erskine & Sara Hanrahan; and Emily Hall.
Julia was happiest vacationing on Cape Cod, traveling, especially to tropical destinations, and spending time with her husband and family. During the early years when her children were in school, she was very involved teaching CCD at St. Patrick Parish, volunteering as a Girl Scout Leader and helping on various boards at the schools her children attended. For several years, she was President of the Stoneham High School Booster Club. Julia
was an extremely talented floral designer and loved working at the Blossom Shop and Gays Florist. Julia's kindness and generosity toward everyone she knew was inspiring. You may not always remember what she said, but you will always remember the way she made you feel special. For the last 13.5 years, Julia's most treasured role was that of Nana. With Hugh, she sat at the helm of the highly trained and immensely loved Cousin Army. The call of the wild will live on.
