Lawrence Durkin, of Reading passed away suddenly Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He was 79 years of age.
Born in Brookfield, MA., Lawrence was a resident of Reading for 40 years. He graduated from Holy Cross College, Boston College Law School and Boston College School of Social Work with a Masters Degree in Psychiatric Social Work. He retired from a distinguished career in the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare. He held the position of Chief Coordinator of Department of Mental Health and Director of Public Welfare in Springfield and Boston. He was a member of the Mass and Federal Bar, former member of Tufts Mental Health Advisory Board, former member and officer of the Board for Bay Cove Human Services Inc., and former Reading Town Meeting Member.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be missed by all. He loved his family. He was a very active lifetime participant in community affairs and local and state politic. He was a U. S. Navy Lieutenant Veteran who proudly served our Country during World War II. .
Mr. Durkin was the loving husband of Pamela (Weber) Durkin and devoted father of Helen Durkin of Medway, Lawrence Durkin and Thomas Durkin. He was the cherished grandfather of Kate Durkin Landry of Medway and dear brother of Joseph Durkin of Northborough and John Durkin of Manchester, N.H.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours in the Joseph Doherty Funeral Home 11 Linden St. Reading Sunday from 4-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 am in St. Patrick's Church 71 Central St. Stoneham. Interment Wood End Cemetery, Reading.
