On December 3, 2023 Lorraine peacefully passed away and returned home to be with her parents and her husband. She was the wife of the late John Obst with whom she spent 14 wonderful years with. She was the daughter of the late Gilda and Matthew DiMuzio. She was the sister of Catherine Stuart and her husband William. Lorraine was the mother of Christopher and his wife Karen and the late Kathleen. She was the loving Nana of Kaitlin D’Allocco and Kyle Obst. Aunt of Lisa Suart, Adam Stuart, and Karl Stuart. Great aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Lorraine started her life and spent 50 years in Everett then spent 40 years in Stoneham. Her final years she spent living in Melrose at The Fitch Home, for which she enjoyed many wonderful days there. She graduated from Everett High School and then earned her Bachelor of Arts degree along with her Master of Education degree from Boston University.
Her passion for teaching lead her on many journeys, including being a teacher at the American Dependents School at Ramstein Air Base in Germany in 1958. She then taught at the American Dependents School on the military base in Tokyo in 1960. When she was not teaching the children of the American Servicemen, she traveled almost every weekend, touring many countries and brought home many wonderful gifts representing the local culture and skills. Once her adventures overseas were done, she was a Guidance Counselor at Melrose High School for 28 years. In total, Lorraine spent 38 years as an educator and even after her retirement, especially with her grandchildren, she continued to teach others and show them a different part of life.
Lorraine was a member of The Wakefield Arts and Crafts Society. An avid crafter, her works were proudly displayed at her home where she would tell anyone who visited what they were. She was also a member of the Wakefield chapter of The Red Hat Society. She enjoyed many adventures with her fellow red hatters. Even after she lost some of her independence, she would be right in the mix planning adventures for all the hatters and just having a ball!
Lorraine’s family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to the nursing staff at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for the making her final days peaceful and dignified. They would also like to thank the private aids and all the staff at Home Instead of Melrose for the fine care that was provided to Lorraine, and for helping her keep her independence for as long as they did. And lastly, and certainly not least, thanks to everyone at The Fitch Home for providing Lorraine with 4 wonderful years of dignity, peace, and just plain life. She fought hard to live there, and spent her time there getting everything she could out of her life.
Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories of Lorraine with her family and friends on Friday, December 15th from 8:30 am-9:30 am in the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street (RT 28) STONEHAM followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Lorraine’s Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central Street, Stoneham.
