Lucy T. Malzone

November 18, 1924 — April 11, 2020

Lucy Malzone, 95 years old, daughter of John and Jennie (Iorio) Malzone, went to her eternal rest on Holy Saturday, April 11, 2020. She was born East Boston and lived for over 60 years in Medford, Massachusetts. For the past 9 years, she resided at Smithfield Woods in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Our family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary care and compassion she received from the outstanding nurses and staff at Smithfield Woods. Lucy greatly enjoyed the variety of activities, especially the musical entertainment and attending the Chapel for the rosary and Mass.

Lucy was a research assistant and worked with renowned hematologist Dr. William Curry Moloney. In June, 1949, at age 24, she co-authored a paper with Dr. Moloney entitled "A rapid method for determination of heterophil antibody in infectious mononucleosis," which was published in the journal Blood and referenced in many articles by other researchers.
After a few years of working with Dr. Moloney, Lucy was the administrator of a blood bank and head of the phlebotomy lab, Lucy led the lab technicians as they conducted various blood testing, including typing of the Rh factor in blood. Lucy was a member of the American Association of Blood Banks for many years.

Lucy was a gifted photographer and gardener. A devout Catholic, she was a Lay Franciscan and had special devotion to St. Francis. For many years, she decorated Saint Raphael's Church in Medford with flowers for various holy days. She also brought Holy Communion to the sick of the parish.

Lucy is survived by her brother-in-law Joseph Ahlschier of North Carolina, her sister-in-law Karen Malzone of Delaware, 2 nephews John DeMelim and his wife Pam, David DeMelim and his wife Jeanne, and 7 nieces, Elizabeth Leff and her husband Jurek, Lucy Ann Ahlschier, Maryann Gallant and her husband Larry, Paula Croce and her husband Lorne, Terese Reimenschneider and her husband Jerry, Kim Malzone and Jennifer Malzone. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.

With her deep faith, we know that Lucy is now reunited in Heaven with her parents and siblings. Due to the current covid 19 circumstances all services are private.
