Mary D. (Desmond) Hayes of Reading passed away on Friday, April 04, 2014 at the Daniels House. She was 89 years of age.
Born on July 6, 1924 in Somerville, Mary was the loving daughter of the late John Desmond and Ellen (Murnane) Desmond. Mary was a warm and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be missed by all who were privileged to have known her.
Mary loved her family. They were first and foremost in her life. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary was a very dedicated advocate for Veterans of the Military. She was a member of the Massachusetts Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, a founding member of DAV Reading Chapter 37 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Chelsea Soldier's Home, the Bedford VA Hospital, West Roxbury VA Hospital and Northampton VA Hospital.
Mary was a former Den Mother Pack 8 St. Agnes Church in Reading, a member of Reading's Woman Club, St. Agnes Sodality, St. Agnes Lamb Club and the Silver Haired Legislature.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Hayes. She was the devoted mother of Thomas Hayes Jr. and his wife Judith, John D. Hayes and his wife Alicia, Brian Hayes, Mark Hayes and his wife Julia and Ellen Crowton and her husband Russell. The cherished grandmother of 3 and the great grandmother of 2, Mary was the dear sister of the late Thomas Desmond, Helen Clements and Anne Desmond Hayes. She was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Monday, April 7, 2014 at 9:30am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Mary's Eternal Life in St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St. Reading at 10:30am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances with the Family on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 2-6pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and handicapped entrance are available. Interment VA Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
