Merrill "Jake" Dowd of Stoneham formerly of Revere passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 85 years of age.
Born in Revere, Jake was the loving son of the late Catherine (McNulty) Dowd and Thomas Dowd. Jake was a warm and caring son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be sorely missed.
During WWII, Jake proudly defended our freedom by serving in the United States Navy.
Jake was an avid golfer at Unicorn Golf Course. He was a member of the VFW and Disabled American Veterans both in Melrose. He was a parishioner at St. Patrick Church in Stoneham for over 20 years.
Jake was the beloved husband of the late Edwina (O'Brien) Dowd. He was the devoted father of Patty Bourrell and her husband Artie of Stoneham and Thomas Dowd and his wife Glenda of AK. He was the cherished grandfather of Robert Bourrell of Lawrence, Dennis Bourrell and his wife Lisa of Wilmington, Debra Figucia and her husband Paul of Tewksbury, Bill Dowd and Stacey Cisco both of AK. He was the loving great grandfather of Ashley, Rachel, Julie Figucia, Kacie and Kayla Bourell. Jake was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Jake's life will be held on Saturday at 10am in St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St. Stoneham. In lieu of flowers please honor Jake by making donations in memory of him to St. Vincent DePaul, c/o St. Patrick Church, 9 Pomeworth St., Stoneham, MA 02180.
