Muriel A. (Doucette) Surette

Muriel Agnes (Doucette) Surette, (Auntie Mimi) of Stoneham, MA, formally of Wedgeport, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. She was 101 years of age.

Muriel was the beloved wife of the late Douglas F. Surette. She was the loving sister of Annette (Doucette) Symons, Catherine (Bella Doucette) d'Entremont, James Doucette and Levitte Doucette, who all predeceased her.

Auntie Mimi was the aunt of Charles d’Entremont and Richard d'Entremont, his wife Lillian, and their children, Denise Mulligan, Patricia Preston, Richard d'Entremont, Jr, and Paul d'Entremont.  She was cousin and aunt to Robert Surette, Marc Surette, Carol-Ann (Surette) Darcy and Brian Surette; aunt to William McNulty, Scott McNulty, Kevin Surette, Jacqueline (Surette) Sayer, John Surette, James Surette, Joseph Surette.  She was the grand aunt and great grand aunt of many other nieces and nephews.

Muriel was born in a small town in Nova Scotia and was the youngest in the family.  She came to live in the United States, sponsored by her Aunt at the age of 25, where she became employed as First Lady's assistant to a family in Brookline.  During this time, she acquired her beloved nickname, Mimi.  A few years after WWII she was in her cousin’s wedding and met the groom's handsome brother, Douglas; it was love at first sight.  They were soon married and remained devoted to each other through 52 years of marriage.

Muriel moved to Stoneham as a bride in 1951 residing with Doug’s family in the home he had purchased via the GI Bill after serving our country in the war.  She lived in that home for 70 years.  Always the host, she loved friends and family celebrations like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Birthdays.  Best of all were the summer celebrations like the Fourth of July barbecues and Smoozies.  Even at 98, she hosted a traditional family dinner of rappie pie for her nephew’s family.  Auntie Mimi and Uncle Doug were the heart and soul of the Surette and d'Entremont families.

Not only a homemaker, Muriel worked at Transitron in Wakefield and then at Manard H. Moore in Stoneham Square, where she was promoted to Floor Supervisor before retiring. As a retired couple, it was time to travel, and travel they did:  Hawaii, the Caribbean, Naples, FL, Italy (where her brother James is buried from WWII), Rome, the Vatican, and many cruises. Most trips were with Doug's brother Curt and his wife May (Muriel's cousin.)

Muriel (and Doug) were devoted parishioners at St. Patrick's Church. Muriel was a member of the Ladies Sodality from the time she was married until she became unable to drive.

Even then, very good friends like Betty (Carr) Smith and husband Bill would take her to Mass and other parish events.  She had so many wonderful friends who loved her and she loved them.

Muriel celebrated her century of life while living at the Fuller House. Some would say when you are blessed to live to 101 years of age, you out live many beautiful loved ones.  While that may be true, even at 100 Muriel found new friends in the residents and caregivers of her new home.
