Neil A. (Johnson) Kade, a beloved husband, father, and scientist, passed away on September 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, creativity, and love. Born on August 2, 1978, Neil's life was a testament to hard work and perseverance, beginning in his youth when he balanced a demanding job with his high school studies to support his dream of owning a car. This tenacity blossomed as he pursued and earned a master’s degree in biochemistry, which took him to Denmark for his thesis work at Aarhus University.
Neil's professional journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He dedicated his career to the field of protein biochemistry, leaving a significant impact at several prestigious institutions, including Novartis, The Broad Institute, Jounce Therapeutics, and Takeda. Ultimately, he rose to the role of lead scientist at Appellis Pharmaceuticals. His relentless pursuit of excellence inspired not only his own work but also those around him. He contributed to advancements in vaccines and cancer immunotherapies.
Yet, those who had the privilege of knowing Neil cherished him for the moments he created outside the lab. He was not only a gifted scientist but also an incredible cook; he turned meals into experiences, crafting deep-dish pizzas from Chicago and perfecting seafood pasta that captured the essence of New England. Neil's culinary skills were matched by his ability to cultivate warmth within his home, where quiet evenings spent watching movies and cuddling on the couch were treasured.
In addition to his professional work and culinary passions, Neil served his country with honor in the United States Army as a paratrooper, earning recognition for both creativity and exemplary service. His hobbies spanned a broad range, from brewing craft beer as Gilded Skull Brewing and boxing to creating art through pyrography and designing spaces worthy of a magazine spread.
Neil's love for his family was the core of his being. He was a devoted husband and a proud father, drawing such joy from simple moments spent with his wife and kids, like getting soft serve at Dandi Lyons. Despite the many remarkable accomplishments in his career, nothing brought him more happiness than being with his beloved family. Their home was a sanctuary of love and creativity, lovingly crafted by Neil's hands and heart.
As we reflect on Neil's life, we remember his ability to see what others needed and to be present in ways that made a profound difference. His generosity of spirit and unwavering love are felt deeply, and it is difficult to imagine a world without his vibrant presence. Neil A. Kade will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
