Neil Douglas Nottebart

July 26, 1931 — December 12, 2020

Stoneham - Mr. Neil Douglas Nottebart, a longtime resident of Stoneham and the beloved husband of Anna (Penta) Nottebart passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 after a brief illness.
Born in Waltham, he was the beloved son of the late Livien and Marguerite (Young) Nottebart. Neil had been employed as a shipper for many years at HB Fuller in Wilmington and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Neil served as a "Tin Can Sailor" aboard the USS Borie (DD 704) during the Korean Conflict, touring Europe and Asia.

An only child who grew up on the family farm in Lexington, MA, Neil was very close with his cousins who lived locally and spent summers with family in Nova Scotia. Neil attended Lexington High School and after graduation enlisted in the Navy. After discharge from the Navy, Neil worked briefly for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts where he met his future wife, Anna. Together they shared 57 years of marriage and had 2 daughters whom he treasured, Michele and Jill.
Neil loved the outdoors and greatly enjoyed freshwater fishing and small game hunting and had great memories of his moose hunt in Newfoundland, Canada, a lifelong dream. He also loved to watch college and professional football as well as hockey…Neil was a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens, perhaps because of summers spent in Nova Scotia. He was a voracious reader, especially enjoying books about history, the Navy and the sea. During spring and summer weather Neil enjoyed gardening, whether at his own home or those of his daughters. For many years, Neil and Anna escaped the winter weather in Florida, taking advantage of the additional time to spend with their daughter, Jill.

Above all, Neil loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed shucking oysters and eating steamers and lobsters at family clambakes, one most recently in July to celebrate his 89th birthday.

Neil was the loving father of Michele (Nottebart) Naehle and her husband Paul of North Andover as well as Jill (Nottebart) Altomare of Winter Park, FL. Grandchildren include Derek and Nicole Naehle, both of North Andover and Kyle, Bryce and Chase Altomare of Florida. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved.

Due to Covid restrictions, a private burial will be held on Tuesday, December 22nd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Neil's memory to Ducks Unlimited, Memorial Contribution, One Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120.
