Richard D. Howard, 80, of Reading MA, died at home on Jan. 16 following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born May 30, 1934 in Cambridge, he was the son of Thomas D. and Louise (Raymond) Howard. He was a graduate of Boston College High School, Northeastern University, and Boston University.
Known for his contagious laugh and positive outlook, Dick was a man of rare character. He brought out the best in those around him, inspiring them to love God, work hard, and enjoy family. Dick was always ready with a new joke or funny story, hoping to bring a smile to all he met. He loved music and could often be heard singing along with hymns, Irish folk songs, and the Beatles.
Dick retired in 2009 after working more than 50 years at Metcalf & Eddy/AECOM, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Quality and Risk Management. He became a Reading resident in 1965 and served the town through many years on the CPDC and other committees. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Agnes Church in Reading and dearly loved volunteering there. Singing in the choir and helping to rebuild the parish center brought him great joy. In recognition of his faithfulness and dedication, he received the Cheverus Award from the Boston Archdiocese in 2014. Medal recipients are chosen for their service to the church over an extended period of time.
He is survived by his wife Mary "Mollie" (Williams) Howard, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in September, as well as his sisters Judith May of Hendersonville, TN, and Donna Dmytryshyn and her husband Donald of Pittsfield, MA.
He was the proud father of Christopher M. Howard of Los Angeles; Jodi Jonsson and her husband Tryggvi of Easthampton, MA; Lauren C. Howard of Philadelphia; and Carol E. Howard of Londonderry, NH. Affectionately known as "Goopy," he was the loving grandfather of Solveig and Geir Jonsson and Alexander Merrill. He is loved and missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
