Richard E. Mercer

March 8, 1926 — June 21, 2015

Richard E. Mercer, of South Thomaston, ME, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2015. He was 89 years of age.

As a child Richard spent summers at Lake Attitash. He played basketball, baseball and hockey in high school before graduating from Stoneham High in 1944. Richard then enlisted in the Navy where he served as a signalman, third class receiving a World War Two Victory Medal and an American Area Medal. After his discharge from the Navy, Richard was employed with the Ford Motor Company and later Raytheon from where he retired. Retirement took him to his happy place, South Thomaston, Maine where he was involved in the local community Lions Club, historical society and activities at the South Thomaston library. He loved riding his lawn mower and hanging at the local Keag store having breakfast and gossiping with the locals. Richard was also a long time member of the American Legion.

Richard was a family man who enjoyed his children and grandchildren supporting them in all their sporting events over the years. He enjoyed a good party entertaining friends and family at pizza parties or cookouts. Richard often came off as grouchy but was an old softy with a heart of gold. He will be missed by many.

Richard was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn (MacKenzie) Mercer. He was the devoted father of Pamela A. Pinard and her husband Kevin, Richard R. Mercer and his wife Laurie and Randolph E. Mercer and his wife Kathy. Richard was the cherished grandfather of Stephen Mercer and his wife Danielle, Jennifer Gabriello and her husband Sal, Robert Mercer, Ashley Mercer, Abigail Pinard and great-grandfather of Aiden Mercer. He is also survived by an Aunt Vi Christy, sister in law Evelyn Holden, sister in law Lois MacKenzie, sister in law and brother in law Dorothea and Gerald LaCasse and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
