Steven A. Calla

d. February 15, 2004

Steven A. Calla passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at his home in Reading surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 15 years of age.

Born in Boston, Steven was a lifelong resident of Reading. Steve's life was committed to music and laughter. He played drums in the Reading Middle School Jazz Band, and was recipient of the J. Douglas Oliver Memorial Music Award in 2002. At Reading Memorial High School, he was a member of the Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble. There he was voted Freshman Band Member of the year.

Steve also played drums in the punk band Lucky Sunday, along with his friends Dylan Bradley, Jake Weinreb and Steve Soccorso. They had done many performances locally and as far away as Wellesley and Plaistow, N.H.

Steve also enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding and creating a party wherever he was.

He fought his cancer with courage and humor. He never complained about the treatments or their side effects. His goal was to be healthy enough to enjoy his friends and his life as if he never had cancer. He did so with an unmistakable style - leopard-print sneakers, a cane with a chrome jaguar for a handle, and a fedora. He taught all of us to laugh in the face of adversity as a source of strength.

He leaves many friends, too many to mention. They were of tremendous value to him and his family as he faced his cancer; his friends stuck with him until the end, and they demonstrated the finest qualities of friendship.

Steven was the beloved son of Robert L. Calla and Barbara (Stanton) Calla. He was the devoted brother of Diana Calla of Reading. Steven was the loving grandson of Eileen (Proulx) Calla of GA and the late Domenic Calla, the nephew of Catherine Jencks and her husband Frederick of GA, Jean Meldonian and her husband Ron of Carlisle, Patricia Merullo of Malden and the cousin of Valerie and Michael Jencks, Lauren and Michael Meldonian and Lara Merullo.
