Virginia C. Gard

December 2, 1922 — November 13, 2008

Virginia C. (Overlan) Gard, 85 of Reading, passed away Thursday, November 13th at Rosewood Nursing Center in West Peabody after a brief illness.



Virginia was born in East Boston on December 2, 1922, the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Mulrenin) Overlan. She grew up in Malden where she graduated from the Cheverus Catholic School for Girls. She then worked for the US Government Selective Service.



She married the love of her life, Arthur C. Gard, on April 21, 1946. Sadly, he predeceased her on October 24, 1980 at the age of 58. They spent 34 happy years together raising their three children in Reading and spending summers together at Newfound Lake.



She is survived by her daughter, Nancy J. O'Soro and her husband, Bud of Reading, her son, Robert A. Gard and his wife Helen of North Reading and her daughter, Carol J. Shiner and her husband, Jim, also of North Reading; as well as nine grandchildren, James, Scott and Kyle Shiner of North Reading, Elizabeth and Joseph Gard of North Reading, Angel Young and her husband Tom and great-granddaughters Elyssa and Nyla of Virginia, Lisa Lawton and her husband Steve and great-granddaughter Ainsley of Methuen, Jen Afarian and her husband Greg of North Andover and Michael O'Soro and his wife Jess of Tampa, Florida. She was also the beloved sister of the late Neil, Peter, Larry, Arthur and William Overlan. She was the loving sister-in-law of Millicent Gard of Venice, Florida; Gertrude Overlan of Malden; Linn Overlan of New Hampshire and the late Josephine and Rita Overlan of Malden as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.



Virginia was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who loved spending time with her family and cherished her summers on Newfound Lake in New Hampshire. She was a past member of the Friends of Winchester Hospital where she was a volunteer for many years as well as the Catholic Daughters of America.



A funeral was held Monday, November 17th from the Doherty-Barile Funeral Home, Reading, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Athanasius Church, Reading. Burial was in Forest Glen Cemetery, Reading.
