Walter J. Perras

May 14, 1917 — July 6, 2011

Walter J. Perras of Stoneham passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at his home. He was 94 years of age.

Walter enjoyed an active youth as one of eight children in his London Street neighborhood in Lowell, MA. His love of sports and the outdoors began at Lowell High as a member of the track team. He designed and built model gas engine planes and won regional competitions in which he flew. Upon retirement Walter resumed this childhood hobby with equal fervor.

Walt was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He served as a decorated combat infantryman of the Yankee Division in WW II, received a battle field commission as second lieutenant, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Upon discharge he married Dorothy, now his wife of 63 years. They settled on Long Island and raised a family of five children, while Walt worked as a newspaperman for over 30 years at Newsday.

An enthusiast with many interests, Walt was a daunting cribbage and scrabble player, an archer and bow hunter, bowler, ballroom dancer, cross country skier, lure-maker and avid surfcaster on Long Island's white beaches.

Walter was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Koshefsky) Perras. He was the devoted father of John Perras and his wife Linda Stuart, Tracy Boies and her husband Pete, Pat Kowalczyk and her late husband Joe, Pam Perras and her husband Vittorio Bucchieri and Cindy Perras. Walter was the father in law of Kathy Baird and the cherished grandfather of Christopher & Devin Perras, Cody, Jeff & Samantha Boies, Kara Pilotte, Lyndsey, Andrew & Jenny Kowalczyk, Marc & Stefan Bucchieri. He was the dear brother of Charles Perras, Edward Perras, and the late Al Perras, Gene Perras, Loretta Brennan, Mary Perras and Fran Perras. Walter was the loving son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Beehler) Perras. He was also survived my many loving nieces and nephews.
