William Timothy Sweeney

William was born in Rockland, Massachusetts a son of the late John Joseph Sweeney and Maud E. (Bond) Sweeney.

The family moved to Charlestown where he grew up with his parents and three siblings. He attended parochial school at Saint Frances de Sales. He belonged to the Boys Club where he became an accomplished swimmer. William enlisted into the United States Navy and proudly served his country in Portland, Maine.

When he retired from his long term career at Local 25 as a perfectionist truck driver, he enjoyed playing golf with his sons at Trull Brook Golf Course. He enjoyed playing hockey and fishing at Fosters Pond or traveling to N.H. or to Cape Cod with family. He also spent much time in Florida for holidays with family. His leisure time was spent watching sports. William was also a great neighbor willing to help others.

William “Bill” is predeceased by his parents and caring wife of 66 years Julia F. (Sukiel) Sweeney, of Stoneham, MA.

He is survived by five out of eight children. His son Michael J. Sweeney who served in the United States Merchant Marines for 40 plus years at the age of 59, sadly predeceased him in 2005. He was also predeceased by his twins Judith and Janice Sweeney. Survived by William T. Sweeney (Billy) Jr. and his late wife June; John J. Sweeney ll and his wife Lisa; Robert R. Sweeney; Carolann and her husband George Cassello; Julie Sweeney.

He was a fun Papa and “Bamps” to 10 Grandchildren: Richard, Darlene, Michael, Mark, George, John, Justin, Sara, Olivia , Andrea. Great Grandfather to 16 Great Grandchildren. Many loving nieces and nephews.

Our Gratitude to the Barile Funeral home of Stoneham for their kindness to our family, to the Veterans Administration in Bedford for there continued medical care that was given to our dad. We appreciated the pastoral care that provided spiritual comfort to our dad at home and to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for their mutual respect that was given to our dad during his final days of his terminal illness surrendered by his family.

A Military Honor Burial Ceremony was held for him at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts on April 24, 2009.
